Yeah, it sounds like with the “idea/age” line….. he is going to be the “humorous doofus” segment. That would be very sad for Walt, as he is, it seems, very serious about his invention… and not just trying to get noticed (like a lot of the “humorous doofus” contestants on that show and American Idol, etc…. who are just seeking attention by purposefully being horrendous.).

Skeezix turns 96 in a few days. I wonder if Frank King actually got his inspiration from watching the Charlie Chaplin movie The Kid also back in 1921. An aspiring opera singer leaves her baby in a car when car thieves leave the baby on Charlie’s doorstep. Doesn’t that ring familiar to Madame Octave and Skeezix in some way?

Hard to say, it would have been close on the timeline. Chaplin’s film didn’t go into wide release until the 21st, a week after Skeezix showed up. But the film’s premiere was February 6th, eight days before Skeezix.

My guess is that comic strip artists of the day didn’t work weeks in advance to have a reserve of material, so if the premiere had enough publicity? It at least seems possible.

I hope this show doesn’t embarrass him too much. Walt doesn’t strike me as someone who is easily embarrassed, though.
