One can help their country besides being a grunt on the ground.

As Walt said the other day, everyone served in one way or another.

    Morning, Village!

I had a cousin who was killed in the English Channel when the troop ship he was on was torpedoed by a German U Boat. His brother also served in the war, as a merchant marine, and died only a few years ago. I am equally proud of both of them.

We don’t need another war, but serving one’s country is something too many of the current generation miss and I think gives them the idea that they are entitled to live in the USA without supporting her. I’m an older vet (1950/60s) so I’m biased, but it think it’s a good bias. .

If you want citizen soldiers than everyone get military training and are kitted to fight if necessary as in Israel and Switzerland. Otherwise they don’t want us to be so engaged anymore. That will change in the future but it depends on who is in charge and if we keep our empire sized military and hooked tentacles in the world as we have for 75 years.

My father drew Army pay, but was attached to the OSS in China (where he was allowed to promote himself from 1st Lieutenant to Lt. Colonel so that Chinese Generalissimos would listen to him—still got only 1st Lieutenant’s pay, though). My mother ran the quality-control lab at Charles Pfizer in Brooklyn, the only factory in the world mass-producing penicillin.
