$100 = “pad slap” (cheap, cheap job that needs to be redone sooner than later)… $500 = everything replaced, and a few extra bucks in Merle’s pockets… even a good brake job shouldn’t be that much unless he’s padding his bill :-)
My Dad once lost all his brakes, emergency included. After a terror ride through red lights and down long hills, he finally collected himself to realize that the only way he was going to stop the car was to turn it off. He careened into an empty parking lot, level enough to lose speed as he was off the accelerator, and turned the key. Lots of grey hairs were earned that day.
