Economist: We can squeeze more water out of that glass.Politician: Vote for me and I will make sure you can keep the glass.Chemist: The H2 is 1/4 full. The true pessimist: That’s not water.Mom: Don’t walk around with that glass, you’ll spill it all over the carpet.Dad: Honey, this glass is almost empty – get me another beer while you’re up.My brother (after spitting in the glass): Ok, it’s more than half full now. So drink it.

True story: a friend of mine teaches English in Korea. So he’s online looking for pictures of half-full glasses and finally gives up because (and I quote) “All the ones I could find were half-empty.”Took him an hour or so to realise what he’d just learned about himself.

The glass is full: half with water, half with air.

OK, Buck, you’re both realists now. And before only one of you was thirsty. Now, you both are thirsty. And this is a positive outcome, how?

I think you meant that half the glass contains gaseous matter, and the other half liquid.

Guys get real. Air only counts when it’s an issue. You don’t look at a space in your house and consider all the air you’ll displace if you put a chair there. You don’t worry about the air when you pull into a parking spot.

Air only counts when it’s in the way or your not getting enough.

Take one drinking glass – any size will do. Fill it to the rim. Use any source material, just ensure its easily removeable. Now remove or reduce this material to the 50% level in the glass. .or.Take one drinking glass – any size will do. Fill it to the 50% level. Use any source material, just ensure its easy to pour/move. .Smash/break both drinking glasses. ……. OK. Experiment over. Both are now without water. Go get Rob for another couple of drinking glasses with water. Try not to repeat experiment.

Half full vs. half empty (of water)? Depends. Was the glass just previoulsy full? Then it is now half empty. Just previously empty? Then it is now half full.

Bzzzt. Sorry dude, you lose. Darby set up the joke with the initial demand for the last bit of water. Satchel’s follow up comment about the state of the glass was clearly established to refer to the remaining amount of water in the glass. Satchel, being fairly simpleminded could not begin drinking from the glass until it was made completely full first. All subsequent dialog by extension relates specifically to the presence and absence of said water. You are completely within your rights to kvetch about other people misusing said cliche but not here and not today.

Satchel amazes me at times… he’s usually retardedly stupid, but sometimes he has these deep philosophical thoughts or very intellectual ideas. It’s weird. :-\
