I sent $40 last month, even though I could barely afford to do so. If only more people would do likewise. The shelters have to do so much with so little.
Investigate any so-called animal protection organization before donating to it. Our local county ‘humane society’ regularly employs strong arm tactics (court orders, police, lawyers, etc) to shut down local ‘no-kill’ privately funded, volunteer staffed, non-profit TNR Rescue shelters.(or confiscate some of their animals) When I found out that the ASPCA was contributing cash to this ‘inhumane society’, I stopped donations to it. I also found that only about 50% of donations to the HSUS go to help animals .. the rest goes to pay those working for them & for the cheap items they send you in the mail eliciting donations. I stopped my donations to HSUS too. Now I only contribute (gladly) to the no-kill Rescue Shelters, all of which are run by volunteers who take no payment, so ALL of my donation goes to the animals they are helping.
people who try to guilt trip people into giving charity are bad for the entire institution, mostly because it can drive people to not donate to said charities to spite them. The cause in need of the charity ends up being a victim of the spite directed towards the a-holes trying to collect for it.
