As for the cow population only existing to be consumed, that may be correct. We might be reminded that buffalo herds used to roam North America in herds so vast it would cover the landscape (seemingly) from one horizon to another. Wildebeasts exist in vast herds. The size of Gnus are no new news. That is without animal husbandry, cattle lots, or mass marketing.
Cows populate because cows populate. I would tend to believe it’s because they are a natural food for predators. I mean, just look at all that musculature! Tasty, tasty musculature…

Actually a prime source for beef cattle is the dairy industry. Boy calves can’t be milked so they are sold to feedlots.
