Love how liberals say the white man destroyed the “Noble Savage” everywhere. Yeah, like with malaria shots. Or that terrible Bush giving all that $$ to fight Aids in Africa. What was the live expectancy in Austria 300 years ago? Life sure was better before civilization reared its ugly head.
G’day Jason, Dry, JFri, Ottod, Barb, Frank and all Meggsie’s mates.
It could be that Ginger is just a little slip sideways from the truth. Apparently Europeans actually did go looking for the Great Southern Land which existed only in theory. The idea was that if the world was round and rotating then Europe needed a land mass diametrically opposite to act as a counterweight.
Afraid my memory of history lessons ends there. Further thoughts welcome.
Lew, the Europeans who “found” such lands were as superstitious a bunch of savages as any they conquered, with a similar life expectancy. They just had guns. However, this gave intercontinental access to resources, including knowledge, which helped everyone. Much like an intercontinental gene pool gave homo erectus advantages which allowed rapid advancement.
