When asked a question, he will give a detailed well thought out answer. Trouble is that his answer has absolutely nothing to do with the question asked.
When my son tried to become an animator I commented that it would be nice to be diverse and able to animate various things in movies (hair, trees, clothes, etc). According to his school the exact opposite is true. Animators are specialists. One will do hair, another clothes, another faces, another trees, still another for grass, etc. Their reputation (and work) depends on that specialization.
Reminiscent of a Dave Berg Lighter Side from Mad magazine. The exec overhears the boss apparently extolling the virtues of independent thinking, and figures he’ll score points if he doesn’t go along with the crowd in assessing the boss’ latest proposal. Turns out the boss is not so fond of independent thinking, and well . . . guess you can all figure out where it goes from there.

So, he is a Marxist … in the style of Groucho (as Prof. Wagstaff):
.
“I don’t know what they have to say
It makes no difference anyway
Whatever it is, I’m against it
No matter what it is or who commenced it
I’m against it” …

Of course, if he said he goes along with the majority then she will dislike him by thinking he is just a yes-man…

My first thought was, “I’m an independent thinker.” My next was, “Oh, no! I have to agree with her And I don’t generally agree with anyone”
