You can safely add just a little bit of dish detergent, say a 1/4 – 1/2 a teaspoon, and it really helps remove grease. You can even buy dishwasher tablets that have normal dish detergent in them already.
Also, most modern dishwashers use less water than washing by hand.

I use the dish soap in the sink. I don’t have a clue how to use the dishwasher. I am done and use less water doing them by hand.

In a pinch you can use about a tblsp of liquid but add a few tblsp of baking soda as well, keeps the suds down
