When I was a kid in Pittsburgh after WW 2, there was no room to expand schools (or money to buy land), so we had classes in gyms, in what used to be called ‘coat rooms’ (before lockers were included for coats), and in hallways. If there weren’t enough teachers, including subs, some of the older kids ended up ‘babysitting’ the kids in lower grades.
