Funny thing was, my 70’ Beetle could out-corner and out-maneuver most of the overpowered Muscle cars the other guys had in High School. AND, at that time, I couldn’t put $5 worth of gas in it, since it wouldn’t hold that much!
Steve McQueen did his own driving in that chase, and I believe he also rode the motorcycle in The Great Escape. He also finished second at Sebring. And the correct color for the Bullitt Mustang is Highland Green. I need to get a life.
There actually was a VW Beetle in that chase scene – you saw it several times and that is how we figured out they were driving around the same streets over and over to extend the filming. Maybe that was Gray’s?

Did Gray also date Jacqueline Bisset?

I had a VW Beetle too back during that time – I especially loved that intimidating horn that sounded like the Roadrunner speeding past Wiley Coyote!

I’ve seen that chase scene many many times and if you check it out, there is a slowly moving green beetle that is passed by
the bad guys’ Dodge Charger and McQueen’s Mustang over and over and over again from different angles has they
traverse the roller coaster like hills in S.F.

The 1964 1/2 Mustang had a price tag of $1964.50. It was a Ford Falcon underneath unless you got the V8.
