We have overhead alarms that go off when some of our equipment needs attention. Years ago, when we had a technician named Dave, we found a clip from the movie of HAL saying “what are you doing Dave”, and set it to be activated manually. It got old quickly.
Recently learned from a retired movie exec that they wanted to use IBM in the movie, but could’t get permission. So they moved all the letters to the left and got HAL. Reminded me that they wanted to use M&Ms in ET. Bet they are kicking themselves for that one.

Hal’s name came from the computer in 2001- a Space Odyssey. The letter after H in the alphabet is I. After A comes B. After L comes M.
