How true! I have a bad constant ringing in my ears (tinnitus), and yet I can still hear my name being mentioned two rooms away. It’s an act of self-preservation.
Reminds me of the times when my grandmother (an immigrant from Germany) and my mother would talk about us in German. When we’d hear our names, we’d ask what was being said, and they’d always say, “Nothing bad,” to which we’d reply, “Then why don’t you say it in English?”
