You keep a mailbox from being removed by using it on a regular basis. If it collects only a small amount of mail for multiple months it’s likely to be pulled.
I’ve not seen a mailbox except at the Post Office in years. They are as rare as a telephone booth. Even at work, in an urban environment, I have to walk to the Post Office to mail something.
