I told my kids that smoking is the same as paying someone to kill you slowly.

When I was in the Navy, guys would buy tax-free cigarettes just before deploying – 14 cents a pack. The walls of the submarine were an odd yellow-brown.

It was .35c back when I started. I quit off and on over the years, but finally quit in 1987 @ $1.10/ pack.

When I was in 6th grade, the teacher did a math lesson on how much money you’d waste at 2 packs a day. They were 55 cents then. He asked if any kids smoked (in 6th grade.) One kid raised his hand.

I was shocked at the expense when I was buying them for patients at twenty-five cents a pack.   Money was worth more then.

My uncle said he quit when he realized that for the price he spent on smokes he could have bought a house.

When I started, Red’s were .65/pack, so roughly $6/carton. (Cartons are slightly cheaper than by-the-pack) Last week I bought a carton of Virginia Slims 120’s for my wife at $120 even.

(She puts up with me, so she’s earned the right to smoke whatever she wants. I quit 10 or 11 years ago, at $45/carton for Marlboro Lights.)
