Dad. They would not let me use my I-Phone. I had to do it by hand. And to tell the truth. I give math tests in my line of work. You would be amazed at how many fail it. Try it yourself. Add Subtract Multiply Divide FRACTIONS. Twenty questions. 90 percent failure rate. Me included. I was instructed but long forgotten.
When the economy was better I was getting jobs tutoring math phobics … I taught grown people how to balance their checkbooks…how to figure out half off or a 10% discount.
Back in the 90’s I managed a chocolate shop.I asked prospective employees, “By the way, how many ounces are there in a pound?”Most common answer: “12?”
Our scale was decimal. I would catch staff and customers referring to .25 lb as “25 ounces” but still calling it a quarter pound.
Had to just walk away till the customer left if they understood each other.Aaaaghhhh!

My mother did all my math for me so I could continue playing “sandlot” baseball ‘til I got to highschool. I’ve regretted that right on up to this day.
