Reminds me of the ad for a temp agency that used to run. “Take a nice vacation. A week, two weeks. We have a fine temporary replacement. And he’s sitting at YOUR desk.”

“Anticipation is getting me down”I am reminded of the gripes at companies who have lay-offs just before Christmas because they are trying to save them from running up bills they can’t pay if laid-off after Christmas. The most unhappy gripers at the practice are those who were looking forward to the sales they would have had but now won’t.

I had a reverse situation. After 4 months of unemployment, I finally landed a job. Just prior to the 4 months, I had won a cruise. So I had to tell my new boss, “I’d like to start next Monday, but I have to take a week off.”

The cruise was all the more enjoyable knowing I had a paycheck to go back to.

This actually happened to me years ago as I was going on my honeymoon – yes, came back to no job.

My brother was working in Mongolia providing housing for the folks building the mining and refining facilities for gold just a few miles away from the Gobi Desert..When the time came for his annual vacation, he took his wife and daughter touring the area and up into Lapland. They all had a great time but when he headed back to work, he found the government had decided to double their take on gold extracted. The company decided they would lose money on the deal and knew they were apt to raise their cut again after things were in operation. They walked away and no other company wanted to try to work under the changed and changing deal, so there is an unworked mine and a ghost town that was still-born..He ran into the same thing in West Africa on an iron ore project. Locals upped their cut, expats walked away. No benefit to anybody because governments are not trust-worthy. Sitting on wealth, living in poverty.
