When he said his great-great-grandfather was in that line of work, my first thought was “they didn’t have highway patrol cops that long ago,” and then I saw the punchline. Cute.

That is how some small police forces paid for their staff.

I totally respect cops but I hate the notion that the only way to generate income is to ticket otherwise law-abiding citizens who are going 10 mph over the speed limit…especially when I see local cops out on the highway!

A property owner was tired of the state police waiting for speeders behind a billboard on his property. He had the billboard changed to read “Slow Down, Speedtrap”. The state police took him to court. They lost on grounds of the billboard was on private property and the property owner had the First Amendment Right to put that on the billboard.

There’s a difference between stealing and enforcing laws. The Highway Patrol doesn’t set the speed limit or the fines, all they are doing is stopping people that chose not to obey the law.

My actual response to a similar statement one day on the side of the road. “Sir……. I just write the ticket. The Judge sets the fines and collects them. You tell the judge about being a crook. Let me know when you’re going to do that I gotta see that.”xD

I found a wallet on the sidewalk some time ago – Drivers license credit cards so I approached a cop who was trying to catch drivers running the stop light in a quiet residential area, I said would you like to return this wallet to the rightful owner just at the end of the street? He said no you take it there.
