That’s Captatio benevolentiae : From the verb capio (“to grasp”, “to capture”, “to try to take, to obtain”) and benevolentia (“benevolence”) in the genitive case, is a Latin expression which, literally translated, means to win sympathy. Sometimes the expression is used in the form ad captandam benevolentiam.
