Within the context of this strip, Ralston’s probably the most steadily employed and financially solvent of the regular characters (after Captain V.). He’s got a lucrative cereal-endorsement deal, for one thing. He probably doesn’t want a Doonesbury gig for the money, but to associate himself with more adult, sophisticated material. He probably would work cheaper than Bugs, but it’s more likely a case of him willing to work for scale in exchange for the prestige, like big Hollywood stars cutting their fees to work with Woody Allen.
