Beer has been around way longer. One theory of the origin of civilization (tied with the neolithic revolution) is that agriculture/civilization arose from a need for guys to have a steady source of brewski. (Tom Standage didn’t invent the theory, but gave it a chapter in A History of the World in 6 Glasses.)
