    I often wondered why nobody thought of the spread offense during the civil war. As it was, they insisted on using tight formations that could be blown to kingdom come during musketry and cannonade………..

    Where as a wide open offense gets swept away by cavalry or smaller platoons that sneak in between the lines and attack from the rear.

    As Buddy Ryan once approximately said: “If you play that in the NFL, you better have a lot of quarterbacks.” And using the spread has a lot of teams down to number 3s this year.
