Jojo is very bright, Mr. Cobb, but he won't apply himself.
when he's focused, he does just fine.
But the slightest thing causes his mind to drift away.
Mr. Cobb?
This looks a lot like my classroom at his age.
Sounds like he’s hyperactive, something that teachers are trained to identify in kids. They’re required to report what they see to the parents and the Principal. Hyperactivity(ADHD) is genetically based. Gator 007 & KabBuch both got it right. Girls can also be hyperactive. As one who is hyperactive, I can relate to this even though I was born before hyperactive kids had a diagnostic method and could be medicated. I am amazed that Joe can keep his job.
“Focused”….I HATE THAT WORD. What she means is, “I can’t get him to focus on that which I want him to focus, which is getting better grades on the standardized test which means nothing to him but everything to my principal.”
“I am amazed that Joe can keep his job.” ADD can be an actually be an asset. It can help Joe in creative thinking and problem solving, though it can interfere with him completing his reports on time.

Police – sometimes a keen eye for detail, and a deaf ear for noise.

Looks like the problem is genetic.

Perhaps there is a desk with his initials carved into it.

ADD and ADHD are not related to Autism.Someone can be Autistic and exhibit ADD or ADHD.
Autism is primarily related to impaired social interaction.
ADHD (ADD is outdated term)is primarily described in attention span and behavior terms.
Mild to moderate cases of either (or both) can often be treated by training the individual in coping mechanisms.

@Agingstoner, not to mention legislators, governor and president (both Mr. No Child Left Behind and Mr. Race to the Top).
