The "last rites" were premature help is on the way!
Won’t drain? Detach the outtake hose and take a look. All your disappeared socks, and little things especially if there’s a baby or small child in the house—they fly out during the spinning between the tub and the side and wash right out. Enough of them, or one good sock, and the hose jams and you have a chance of getting your things back.
There is a small opening in the top back of the clothes dryer. It is an portal into another dimension, through which only a single sock may pass. Once this event occurs, all further items of that load are prohibited passage. No one knows why this is so.

My son-in-law’s loose change did it, too. Of course, the 1,000 single socks that are missing didn’t help . . .
