Machiavelli discussed that in The Prince, the first half-way realistic discussion of how to rule most effectively (there were a number of them out there as economic changes brought new families into power in Renaissance Italy, although they can be traced back to Plato’s Republic.) The others simply advised you to be perfect. Big help. Machiavelli said ideally you should be both, but if you have to make a choice go with fear – people will betray someone they love before someone they fear.
A person who is loved has people obeying their wishes because they want to please the person loved. A person who is feared only has control when the people think the leader’s eye might be upon them.

Loved is optimal, feared is more instantaneous in getting buy in…..

Choose love. You don’t want your siblings running away from you. You want them to worship you.

Stalin and Mao chose fear. And each murdered 10+ million of their countrymen. And don’t get me started on Hilter.

The 20/80 rule? It is easy to follow than to lead?

Toad’s mother taught him that if you can’t be loved, be feared.
