Superman doesn’t need a cape. He can fly all on his own.

I thought he just leaped tall buildings in a single bound. The cape is to steer, like a parasail.

In comics I read he could take it off, wrap up bad guys, and carry them as he was flying.

The cape is rather dashing but a liability for Batman. The Composite Superman carried them both by their capes.
