The Beandocks Cuco: Incoming text msg frm Harry Reid: Obama is lightskinned and has no discernible "negro" accent. Incoming text msg frm Trent Lott: Segregation today, segregation tomorrow, segregation for-evah!
gad, remember the ‘television negro” of the sixties?
…..if you saw an african-american in a tv show back then (think dick van bleeep, star trek mission impossible ,etc) the producers only hired those with caucasian features……
nighthawks: I was going to bring up the Dick Van D. episode where Rob was sure Ritchie was switched with another baby at birth (with Greg Morris) - then it hit me..
“Caucasian features”??
I assume you mean that the networks would only show ‘clean and articulate’ African-American characters, like Diahann Carroll on ‘Julia’? Better than “Beulah”, to be sure, but aside from Rochester Van Jones (for its day) and Alexander Scott, I can’t think of any complex African-American characters on television until the ’70s.
