I really don’t understand why law-abiding legal citizens would have anything to fear about showing identification and documentation. I get stopped by the police at random spot-checks, don’t see the problem. I cross the Canada/U.S. border, never have a problem showing my passport when it is requested. I don’t get the objection to it, i guess.
The Fourth Amendment protects against arbitrary search and seizure. IMHO, “spot-checks” violate the Fourth Amendment.
Border crossing checks are not the problem - it’s an “end justifies the means” conundrum. Same as the “torture” argument.
Every time we subscribe to a “if you haven’t done anything wrong you shouldn’t object” type of philosophy, we agree to give up some of the freedom upon which this country was founded.
Wow does this topic ever stir up the Neo-fascist, corporatist
ire! Militaristic chauvinists love that SB1070.
The AZ repubs are now considering having a state-issued
ID photo tag that must be worn at all times. Violators will be
shot. And, most importantly, anyone can shoot them since there are no restrictions on firearms in that state.
Why can’t they just secede?

Oh yeah, they can! A license isn’t proof if legal status.
Besides, part of the issue is the idea of being stopped and asked for papers (and not everyone has a license) – based on what? On how you look.
I studied in West Berlin when it was still West Berlin, and on my forays into communist East Berlin, I used to see that sort of thing all the time.

After the last two campaigns, McCain ought to be subject to a sanity hearing before he gets a taste of that taco goodness.
