Whites are frightened — their ranks are dwindling — take Europe, for instance, where birth rates are quite low

Mr. Russell, no part of what is now Mexico was bought/stolen from the U.S. Many of the people living in TX, AZ, NM & CA at the time it became part of the U.S. are considered Latinos. Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens. If you still haven’t gotten the message, there is a much more sizable Latino population in the U.S. than gringo population in Mexico. I think Alcaraz is questioning the underrepresentation of Latinos relative to the proportion of the population they compose.

So how many Latinos want to be “honored” to fill someone’s idea of a quota, to match the percentage points?

Placido Domingo is not Latino. He’s from Spain. Also Chita Rivera is from Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory in the caribbean.

I would go with Rivera being Latina—that is, loosely someone of Hispanic descent born in the Americas—but while Domingo might be considered Hispanic, I doubt many Californians (or Southwesterners) would consider him to be Latino.

And Mr. Russell, we are not talking about Latinos who live in other countries; we are talking about talented Latino artists who live and even were born here.

People who are born in Latin America are latinos. People from Spain are Spaniards. The word latino refers to people born in the new world , not Europe.
