Trust me, Doc, no more revolutions in this country. We can barely get a decent protest demonstration off the ground.Anything, no matter how minor, is apt to be put down with our newly-militarized police just itching to use their weapons. And, as Saint George says, “These @#$&%$ always get away with it.”
Incidentally, it always amazed me that thousands could fill Tahrir Square in Cairo and stay in the face of a dictator’s power. Here, when a billionaire gave the word, Zuccotti Park was cleared in minutes.
Excellent comment as always, alise. Orwell thought it would be the government that oppressed us, as the republicans in fact think it does. They both missed the truth that the government would become just an arm of big business as you have detailed.
My 30 year old nephew who inherited a building company recently told me that he was very upset with the welfare state. He couldn’t keep people on the job because they would work just long enough to qualify for unemployment, stay on it until it run out and then come back to work. The was standing in his 3/4 of a million dollar house telling me that he paid his workers so badly that they were better off on welfare, and he thought they THEY should be ashamed? And, he was serious!!!!!
What did the wealthy do to “win” (as if they were really just you and me)? How about buying legislators and judges with “campaign contributions”, now unlimited. How about funding ALEC to write laws benefiting themselves? Having those legislators keep giving them tax breaks that save us pennies? Requiring the rest of us to buy their products and services for top dollar while we get cost of living raises for the last thirty years?

The poor might end the current reincarnation of the War on Poverty by again asking “Where do I go to surrender?”

I was never like the occupy people. What personal success I have is due to my making reasonable choices to earn my economic comfort.

What did the wealthy DO to “win”? And no, I don’t think voting for Republicans helped any.
