Would they be Powhatan, Sitting Bull, Geromino, and Joseph?

Mt Rushmore is located on “Paha Sapa”, Black Hills region sacred to the Lakota nation and outright stolen by whites when the Lakota refused all “sales offers”. One culture’s monument is another’s slap in the face.

I am increasingly (in my old age) becoming anti-statue/public memorial of any sort. Especially those carve into mountains. My. Rushmore is an affront. Stone Mountain in Georgia is worse. Even Crazy Horse, which I remember visiting as a child when it was barely more than a hole where the armpit would be, is something that troubles me. I remember thinking how sad it was that so much of a beautiful mountain would simply be done away with. And I suspect it would have ever been started except to act as a counterweight to the others. For my money, people who do good do not need to be lionized in stone or metal — if they truly did good, then their best memorial is to be emulated.

Now dump the Mt Rusmore name. Some idiot anglosajón, Charles E. Rushmore, named it after himself.Mount Rushmore was known to the Lakota Sioux as “The Six Grandfathers” (Tȟuŋkášila Šákpe) or “Cougar Mountain” (Igmútȟaŋka Pahá) wiki

Got to laugh at Mr. Eduar Lopez Alcaraz’s posturing as a advocator for the Native Americans. You know your name is as about as Spanish as you can get. History shows that the Spaniards did quite a job on Native Americans, why do you always show Anglos only as the bad guys? There is more than enough blame to go around for history. But that is what it is, HISTORY. There will always be winners and losers in the world. The only time we see people gnashing and wailing about what their or someone else’s ancestors did, is when we are fat dumb and wealthy. When the chips fall down, and we are back to scratching and clawing to survive, the feeling for others tends to just disappear.

Nice. ;-) Of course, it would be better if it had never been carved in the first place. Sadly, there is no way to restore it to what it was.

Actually, the Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Jefferson monument desecrated an earlier natural formation that envisioned the local Natives holy figures.
