A note for the young’ns here: The legendary comedian Milton Berle would greet his audience with “Good evening, ladies and germs” and then say ‘I mean ladies and gentlemen. I call you ladies and gentlemen, but you know what you really are.’
(I had to look up the follow-up to complete the context. I had forgotten it, and the greeting, on its own, didn’t seem to be as funny as I remembered.) (I discovered that it went back to his radio show in 1948-1949. I do not. :~) )
