To celebrate my first year here on GoComics (and my birthday–Jan. 25), I’m holding a contest. And I think it’s a dilly!
Hugo and Nebula-winning-author Orson Scott Card volunteered to write a wonderfully silly caption for the contest. So the scene is set. But what happens next is up to you!
Write some funny dialog for the woman and/or man in this comic and win some great prizes. Details, rules and an online form for submission are available on my site at: http://bit.ly/7ZaUHA
(I know it’s tempting to just post your ideas here. But if you want to win the contest, your dialog MUST be submitted via the form on my site.)
She was about to douse him with gasoline and set him ablaze, but not before she enjoyed the nice breeze and warm sun on that mid-winter’s day. As the song, “Getting to know you, getting to know all about you”, calmly whispered in her ear.
The commentors who feel like that have it and go on your site, when will others see the different results and how many will you narrow down? Who knows u could have a lot to chose from?
Have a great B-day John hope the family helps you celebrate and you have nice weather.
OSC is one of my favorite authors - so by my estimation you travel in good company. Do you suppose that the tree in question was along the Hatrack River? I’ll have to ponder a submission. Say “hi” to Ender & Bean for me!
Joey, I’m sorry that having Orson guest write for me is such a problem for you.
I know Orson’s views are controversial and I certainly don’t agree with him on some important issues. But I enjoy his work and he’s been exceedingly kind to me and I’m thrilled to have him involved in the contest.
In fact, you can expect to see Orson’s work at least one more time in the near future in regard to Last Kiss.
I have several other famous guest writers lined up (for future contests) and I didn’t ask them their political views.
I’m pretty liberal. Occasionally, I even express those views in my comics. But I have some good friends (and fans) who are conservative.
I think one of the big problems in this country right now is that things have become so polarized that neither side is really talking or listening to the other.
Granted, it’s not often that I hear much worth listening too. But I try to keep an open mind.
I’m accepting submissions through Feb. 5. By Feb 8, I’ll pick and post my seven favorite and people can vote for the one they like best through Feb. 13.
The day after Valentine’s Day (hey I’ve got to celebrate!) I’ll post the winning entry here and on my site.
Check out http://bit.ly/7ZaUHA for details, online submission form and details about the great prizes.
While I understand that Mr. Card would readily, if reluctanctly, have me thrown in jail for loving, living with, and raising a child with my partner as I have for the past 17 years, I have to take issue with the charge that he has minimal writing talents. I’ve read some of the Ender series and I find them enthralling reading. I believe that Mr. Card is in many ways a brilliant man, though unfortunately misguided and misinformed about some aspects of human behavior. And the caption above is funny.
I value free speech and Mr. Lustig’s right to choose his friends and his contributors to the strip. I enjoy the strip and will certainly continue reading it and look forward to whatever is in store. And Happy Birthday, Mr. Lustig!
Oddly enough, I’ve been on the other side of this equation. I’ve had people stop reading Last Kiss because they were offended because they thought I was too liberal.
(I’ve also had people object that I do too many jokes from a gay-positive point of view.)
Before this all started, I wasn’t that aware of Orson views. I heard that they were conservative and somewhat controversial, but not a lot of details. I still don’t have a lot of details.
I don’t think, however, that this is the right forum to discuss them. Orson is here as my guest and he’s doing me a favor by pitching in as a guest writer.
Oh, and thanks everyone for the good wishes regarding my birthday. It was a generally good one. I went to dinner with my sweet wife and saw a movie–“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.” Funny, funny film. One of those rare movies that works for both kids and adults.
Sound like your BD was better then mine. Mine is past. I had to work but co-workers surprise me with BD cookies. Then new years day went to find a certain location and ate a place that closed out west due to franchise going close to bankruptcy. Not to many people would care for my choice but to me I enjoyed.
Me I am married with two adult kids.

Orson Scott Card is a notorious homophobe who regularly rants against the gay community in the Deseret News and the Mormon News.
He is not worthy of respect, despite his minimal talents for writing children’s science fiction.
I’m sorry that you selected him to start this series. Hopefully, you’ll have better contributors going forward.
