The Donner party didn’t have a cabin. They were crossing the mountains to California when they got trapped by the snow. The snow does get deep there. The highway department has to use snowblowers instead of plows to clear the road. I stopped on an onramp there and found the top of the snowbank was 4 feet over my head.
