Isn’t breaking the Fourth Wall a comic strip trope?

I’ve always thought signs like the third one should read “Violators will be Violated!”

Is “ink remover” aka “ink eradicator” sold these days? It was usually no more than a tiny bottle of chlorine bleach with an applicator attached to the lid. If you needed to write over the spot where the error had been bleached away, the new writing usually smeared or bled. Aesthetically unpleasant.

With the advent of the various white out agents, you could write or draw over the corrected spot. It worked for cleaning up photocopies or computer printed text too. In the mid 1980s, I heard the “Aquaman” artist Craig Hamilton describe Wite-Out® as “the comic strip artist’s best friend”. Even easier to use and write over [or draw or type] are the later tapes, ribbons, and sheets of white covering agents.

And the “legend” is true. The original white out fluid was invented by a secretary who bottled white tempera paint for her own use. Later she improved the formula and named it Liquid Paper and eventually became a multimillionaire from the invention. And yes, she was Bette Nesmith Graham, the mother of Mike Nesmith of the Monkees.

I saw a Facebook post of an actual sign in front of a store saying, “Shoplifters will be prostituted.” I commented that it might be a good way for them to pay for what they stole, but I don’t know if anyone tried that idea.
