    Etymology lesson of the day: silversmiths made silver vessels and jewelry. Tinkers repaired them by soldering. They used a disposable rag to keep the solder from going where they didn’t want it to go. The rag would get ruined after several uses. This rag is known as a tinker’s dam. (That’s “dam” not “damn”).
