We don’t feed ours wet food and don’t have an electric can opener, but our cat recognizes the sound of my chair scooting back after breakfast and the sound of our recliners closing up when we stand up among other noises. As soon as we’re on our feet he’ll be asking for something.

My dog can be sound asleep on my bed upstairs. If I open the fridge to get a beer, no reaction. If I open the deli drawer where the hot dogs and cheeses are, there is a sudden avalanche of golden retriever rushing down to the kitchen.

I simply cannot peel open a Kraft single quietly enough to avoid a swarm of cats under my feet. I’d swear that Roland’s body gets up and brings him to the kitchen even when he’s dead asleep.

We have a cat that is addicted to butter. Whenever anyone opens the butter compartment, she hops up on the counter and wails loudly.

I know someone who had a dog that loved bread. You couldn’t even say the word without the dog going crazy. If you wanted to make a sandwich, you needed to use “pre-toast.”

Either he’s had owners with very old can openers, or he’s a very old cat!
