Well, I have to admit, Ann Eiffel has a point about him talking on the job, but she could manage to be less of a jerk about it. But if Brad does go clean the lady’s room I’m just curious who she’ll set her sights on first: Toni or Bernice?
@professorchaos I’m glad I didn’t work at your bookstore. If you treat people like professionals, that’s the quality of work you’ll get. If you treat them like children… perhaps you’ve got control issues brought on by insecurity.
We don’t know how long in ‘real time’ that Brad & Toni have been chatting. If it has been like 15 or 20 minutes that Ann has observed this activity. She has a right and a duty to verbally reprimand Brad. However, it should be done privately and not in a sarcastic manner. By doing it in the manner shown in the first panel. She portrays herself as a petty dictator and has aroused the ire of Toni. Toni will not allow her man to be bullied by Ms Eiffel and will see to it that he is treated properly. An angered woman never forgets and can be “Hell on Wheels!” LOL
I can see how Ann could be justified for the telling Brad to get back to work today -though she said it kind of mean- but I can’t remember Zane being argumentative with her; Bernice was, sort of, but it was mainly after Zane got fired. After that she didn’t care whether or not she kept the job. And I think the whole fire incident was after she got sent to Tokyo but I am not 100% sure.
ProfessorChaos said:Ann has every right to be angry. The Dorkboy’s loafing on the job. She’s got a shop to run.***********************************Troll warning !
Eiffel is annoyed because she’s a habitual abuser and a control freak. She looks for opportunities to put others down for the benefit of her own massive ego. She learned nothing from getting shipped to Japan, but rather became even more vindictive. I see a confrontation between her and Toni as a result of her poor treatment of Brad, and my money is on Toni.
Nice one, Ann! You’ve managed to alienate a whole bunch of regular customers in one swipe. Sheeze, what a psychopath. And I believe that psychopaths never change, as she is amply going to demonstrate.
Kudos to Greg for a a well drawn character in Ann. In his own words he states that she is one of his better designed characters and I must agree. And rat own, Mojitobaby, rat own.
In a productive business, an employee ought not to be chatting at work. But of course this is the Eyeful’s way of warning off Toni and marking her property.
I find it interesting that anyone who does not drool over Toni & Brad or agree with the majority opinion is troll. Everyone is allowed their own opinion, and they are allowed to post it. Just because they don’t agree with the rest of us does NOT make them a troll.
Ann Eiffel is simply being harassing…. which can be normal behavior for a poor boss. A boss needs to look at the overall work ethic of an employee… and as is typical for Brad, he has been working diligently (albeit a bit grudgingly) at his work at Wennie-World. Ann (and any boss) should save their time and energy to reprimand (and potentially punish and/or fire) workers who purposefully avoid their work or do it perpetually poorly or incorrectly. A worker at Wennie-World who does NOT talk with coustomers in the resturant (no matter how “perfectly” they clean and mop) is NOT an asset in that sort of job. The job entails both a strong work ethic AND people skills.
It’s pretty shortsighted on Ann’s part to reprimand an employee in front of a paying customer – for talking to that customer! Even if she saw them kiss, Toni’s still a restaurant patron – and since she has no idea who Toni is, she could well be the owner of the franchise, a la Undercover Boss. Unless your first name is Indiana, it’s never a good idea to crack the whip like that.
And because of the federal deficit / debt ceiling deal, there won’t be any money going to states or cities anytime soon for first responders…so Brad should really start enjoying wiping down the ladies room. It’s the only job he’s going to have for quite some time. :-(
Rolling your eyes and ignoring is realy the better way to go, because acknowledgment from you – especially if it’s contemputuous – is what it’s after. If you flame it that might be momentarily satisfactory for you, but there’s always some well-meaning but out-of-the-loop person who’ll defend it and thus it gets the attention it craves – this is why it goes to outrageous lengths in its postings, to provoke a response. So denying it any recognition is what hurts it most. Starving it is the best revenge.
Bernice and Zane were working. Surely they WERE allowed to work and chat. I see that a lot. Toni is a customer and workers are expected to be friendly and polite to customers, aren’t they? So Ann is making a lot of assumptions. Ann is just jealous another female is interested in Bwad. She’s got her claws in him, so she thinks I can imagine you being an Ann. I would probably quit on my first day. I’ve no patience with boss who hovers, snips, hmmphs, criticizes, sighs, is impatient, etc. I had those and I developed a bad taste for those types. They are never satisfied.and always sees the worst in everybody. They act charming to their superiors which is how they get promoted..
I would. He is a decent man who knows his place. He loves his girlfriend. He is good to his parents. He has a normal sibling relationship with his teenage sister. He gave his best friend a home (we don’t quite know where he lived before). Any employer would be happy to have him. He is quite normal. Employers don’t like the weirdos (Knute or Tiffany) unless the job is well suited to either of them. Knute – probably in a band or professional skateboarding….Tiffany, modeling, actress, news anchorwoman.
Wow I am so sympathetic towards Brad. I remember back in the day when I had a kind of rude boss like that who expected me to work when I was on the clock and my girlfriend would make snotty remarks about her behind her back while I was still on the job. Everyone felt sorry for me too.
There will be no catfight. Toni will not jeopardize Brad’s employment at the only job he could get within walking distance of his house. Especially in Greg’s fantasy land of Pittsville where UI doesn’t exist. Besides – Ann has not yet made any predatory actions and – besides – it’s the highlight of Brads day to push a mop or be pelted with french fried by ill-mannered brats.
hey vandelay, does it bother you to hire someone who mopes around your place of business and tells people he’s only doing this job til something better comes along? it wouldn’t bother me but it bothered my boss and i was fired. everyone felt sorry for me then, too. :(
If Brad had a habit of “chatting” on the job, it would be a problem. but once or twice, no. I’m sure he’ll get the message and won’t do it again. just don’t let him go see the movie Horrible Bosses
Don’t worry Brad. Your boss is not so bad. The worst bosses are in offices across America. That say, “I would never ask an employee to do anything I would not do myself.” They are the ones that live for the job. We took our jobs so that we could live.
OK, enough is enough. How doyou expect a comic strip to be a comic strip if the characters don’t interface with each other? Troll or no troll, putting out statements like he’s always goofing off or he sohould be fired because he’s always talking to other characters is just plain stooopid,
Nnnno. I for one hope Dirk gets hired at, or at least walks into, Wienie World and gives Ann Eiffel everything she deserves… from every appropriate dimension. I’m beginning to get annoyed at the way males are portrayed on this strip. Getting close to Brenda Starr levels of of gender politicized caricature.

Chatting as they are in the middle of the floor
A practice that some managers seem to abhor
Just say hi, goodbye, perhaps a peck on the cheek
That is if you want a paycheck for the week
Sweep and mop, wipe and plunge
All part of the daily grunge
Gender knows of no bounds
When it comes time to make the rounds
Just knock loudly, announce yourself, secure the door
Restock recepticles, wipe it down, police the floor
It only takes a minute or a little longer perhaps
Providing of course there have been no mishaps
The job of a custodian never is complete
It’s rough on the back, not to mention the feet.
