So, this whole week’s comic arc looks like it will only feature Fogarty and Ms. Phelps? Gosh, I hope Not! BBBooorrriiinnnggg. ;)

People who have watched old TV series may remember what happened when Dobie Gillis & Maynard G. Krebs got out of the Army and attended S. Peter Pryor Junior College— they found that Mr. Pomfritt, formerly of their old high school, was teaching there! This may be the reason some people expect Fogarty to not be leaving the strip…

A poem called “Ring”? It looks like the kids know that one, already…. – What’s that saying? ….Don’t cry over spilt milk… cos milk is wasted on the young? Or is it don’t put all your poems in one book?…

I think the way Greg is showcasing Mr. F all this week (and on a special website, no less) forecasts the exit of this character permanently. Else, why all of the fanfare? He’s reminiscing about his teaching career and is showing how much he really did Not enjoy teaching. He’s retiring! Go for a cruise Mr. F, meet a neat lady, become friends…see the USA in a ramshackle motor home…rest, relax, and write that book you’ve always wanted to do but couldn’t because of lack of time! ;)

There was a Twilight Zone episode about a teacher who was retiring. His thoughts were the same as Fogarty’s that he had not made an impression on his students throughout his career. But, on his last day, as he sat in the empty classroom. Several of them appeared and told him how he had changed their lives. It is a very touching episode!

What kind of idiot teacher starts reading a poem 2 minutes before the lunch bell?

i have long enjoyed Luann. Until the last month (?) or so. The whole prom thing, the ending of high school thing as presented has been a real SNOOOOOOOOOOOOZE. All I am left wiht is WHY …going out wiht a whimper has not been the usual with this strip. But this series has been painfully a Who Gives A …Darn.

My latest good book beckons… ’Nite all!
“Education makes a people easy to lead, but difficult to drive; easy to govern, but impossible to enslave.”(Lord Brougham, 1778 – 1868)

He began reading, because the class, & poem meant something to him-not those kids, who were waiting for that bell to ring. If hired, they will wait again, for that bell to ring. So goes today’s youth, and US businesses & colleges.

@ORMouseworks: I agree, but I also have to point out that Ray Bradbury said: “You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.”
I had way too many ineffective teachers in high school. I respect the profession a lot more than I respect the people I was expected to learn from.
A culture that sees no value in educating its young has no future. It is doomed.

I picture Mr. Fogarty morphing into an off-screen character sending postcards of his retirement exploits to Ms. Phelps, a la Uncle Traveling Matt from Fraggle Rock. They eventually run off together and live as hard drinking expats in Ireland.

Yes… this great teacher is the epitomy of why public schools are becoming ineffective and have catapulted us into the bottom tier of 1st world countries. Education has become youth management. It would SHOCK most parents if they could spend one day in a public school setting to see what their children either are (or are not) being taught.

I sense a Mr. Holland’s Opus, smaller scale of course. Students are too self-absorbed at the time, but in later years they look back and say, “You know, Mr./Ms. ______ wasn’t so bad after all.” I spent some time trying to find a high school teacher I had to thank him for caring and helping me, but I could never find him. Maybe Luann won’t wait. The Fogartys of this world deserve that much.

Frankly, Mr. Foggy-Bottom, I THINK a Better Word would be “THANKLESS”, Because You’re teaching a Bunch of “INGRATES”.

Either he didn’t plan his lessons well, or it took all the class time for him to get them settled down.

Yesterday continued:*B.S.. – thanks, that IS Mort! Don’t know if he crashed the Pitts prom or if he was an invited guest who got dumped at the door..*Levi’s Writing: He might not have gotten published for money, but he writes and gets read. To me, that’s being published. While I appreciate FlowerGirls’s compliments, Levi can write beautiful, funny, original prose while I merely write essays: you know, subject, verb, predicate, period.

Mr. Fogarty was an exceptional teacher. Yes, a third level character, but in the latest strip he did in fact get his lessons across to the characters in front of him. Knute listened and the lesson sunk in.
I believe Mr. F ‘s character was a beloved teacher of Evan’s in an earlier life. (Even maybe so far as a relative) Thus the heartfelt sendoff.
Yes, Mr. F, Luann and the rest of the class listened, learned and assimilated. What you taught is still on file in their pencil drawn heads just waiting to emerge later in comicland life. Fare well to you Mr. F – enjoy your retirement.
PS Love thatIAmJayBlue – don’t write all your poems in one book. I gotta steal that…

Doesn’t his classroom have a clock in it? He must be a very poor manager of time if he starts something right when the bell is due to ring.

Well, Fogarty, it seems many here think you’re just an old fogey. Maybe you’ve been more effective than appearances suggest. Don’t get down on yourself. Enjoy retirement! Maybe even sweep Miss Phelps off her feet, so to speak! Cheers, Fogarty, old chap!

I have to wonder if Greg Evans is going to retire the Luann strip after they graduate? This arc seems to be building to something like that.
JayBluE over 10 years ago
“If we are being shown flashbacks of Fogarty this week, why didn’t Greg start with the very first one?”^If you’re talking about the “Fogarty” comic he sent to High Schools, there’s an article somewhere that shows that those are VERY hard to find, for those who don’t have a copy. I believe it has to do with the fact that it’s probably considered “crude” by him (relatively speaking, of course!). We all may treasure the “prototype”, but usually people don’t like to have the “raw” form around, as they like to show the more “seasoned” work, instead (which is in this case, the “Luann 1985-present” versions of Fogarty)….
JayBluE over 10 years ago
And since “Luann Againn” has been running in consecutive order, he probably doesn’t want to “step on that”. We’re just getting “Fogarty’s Greatest Misses Hits” in terms of Greg showing how Fogarty has viewed his experience in relative moments….
Caldonia over 10 years ago
And I personally don’t get why I SHOULD care about someone so one-dimensional and pretend anything he’s ever done has ever made any sense. Because, sniff, teachers need luv? Well of course they do! But Fogarty’s not a teacher, he’s a cipher!

1. A good teacher knows what time it is, and wraps up his lesson just before the bell.
2. In properly disciplined schools, students do not leave the classroom until the teacher gives permission, even if the bell has rung.
