Comic book and comic strip letterers almost always avoid the word “flick” because the ALL CAPS lettering style plus reduced size of the original text plus the frequent lack of sharp print (especially on newspaper stock) has often caused readers to see another word entirely.

Bernie’s body language is not favorable for Gunther: crossed legs, arms in lap, not turning but looking sideways at him. And, I agree, Knute is the original and Hair doesn’t fill the bill.
He’s like that annoying single hair that you see clinging stubbornly way up high on the wall of the bathroom shower in a friend’s or relative’s home. What do you do with it?
she’s disappointed because the WRONG people are there.I wonder if Paris(Tiffany) has Piro trapped at the other moviehow is she going to deal with Gunth? stay tuned.
“Why SURE, Hairball! PLEASE Help Yourself to MY Food! And Feel FREE to Talk LOUDLY during the Showing of the ‘Silent Movie!’ And DON’T Forget to Sift Though the contents of whatever is Left in My Wallet when the ‘flick’ is Over With, “Mr. Entitlement!!” – Gunther, Who is just Now Wondering Why the HECK He’s HERE, When He COULD BE down in Tiffany’s room, VIGOROUSY Studying Her Anatomy. ……,“NOTES!!”
Well, Gunther had been complaining about Bernice’s fascination with Piro. His scheme to keep the two of them from being alone together tonight, however, proved unnecessary (as was totally predictable). Now can maybe some of these people stop trying to hook up with one another through ridiculous schemes and take advantage of their college environment to hang out with people they didn’t go to high school with? There are thousands of female undergraduates at Moony, Gunther. Why are you suddenly fixated on (I was about to say, “stalking”) Bernice, whom you dated briefly in HS and it didn’t work out? And Bernice – you’ve finally met someone who wasn’t a classmate at Pitt HS, but I use the word “met” in the very vaguest sense, since you know nothing about him. Why not just try to talk with him, instead of playing these stupid games? If he isn’t interested in talking with you, well that’s all you need to know, right there. Is this the way that things will continue to go in Luann for the next X years (until Greg retires)? It’s possible to have a funny and entertaining strip about college life that isn’t build around stupid schemes hatched by 19-year-olds who act as if they were 10.
I’m not too fond of Hair yet tragically, I SO identify with him. I too was (and often am) totally clueless to other people’s romantic plans and ploys. Yeah, I’d think G’man was offering snacks to me too!
Gads, i hope Bernice soon extracts herself! It is not that hard to do. Even just starting the movie and then saying, “Excuse me.”, shutting off the lights, and not returning to the sofa works.I think they both are going to have lessons on what does not work.
A few people have suggested that Piro is over at Dez’s watching “Barbarella.” But Dez is in on Bernice’s scheme, so if Piro did go to the “Barbarella” screening, here’s what I think would happen:
Dez puts the movie on and excuses herself from the room. She enters the common room.Dez: Bernice, can I see you for a minute?Bernice: Sure. Excuse me. She gets up to join Dez at the back of the room.Dez (whispering): Piro is in OUR room. Bernice (whispering): What?! But I’ve got his favorite movie, “Nosferatu,” playing in the common room!Dez (whispering): I reminded him! But he said he’s seen that many times already. He really wants to watch “Barbarella.”
Oh, gosh, i just had the image of what Gunther might do if Bernice extracts herself the way i imagined. He might follow and take a chair next to her. Yipes.
Gunther of course knows that Tiffany is trying to set him up with Bernice. I doubt that he cares at all that she is doing it to have Piro to herself, since Gunther too wants Piro to be out of Bernice’s life, and if he winds up with Tiff instead, then so what.
“Going in for a biopsy this afternoon. Wish me luck, gang.”.Good luck with your biopsy.(Ever go for a brain scan and they can’t find it?That’s when you know you got trouble in River City.)
This serves Bernice right for lying and deceiving people. She should just show the movie and be a good hostess. She is really an unpleasant character, very unlikable.
Remember Bern’s Happy Dance when Piro said “See ya there.”? Once again anticipation is better than the experience. * (Is that why so many of us live in the future rather than the moment, that anticipation isn’t limited by reality while the present is?)
Bernice could find some other way to spend time with Piro, without using other people in her scheme. Hair won’t pick up on her disappointment, but Gunther might.
Going to be honest, seeing Gunther push and try so hard is becoming somewhat painful, especially since Bernice is not at all interested. Just confirms in my heart that Bernice and Gunther do NOT belong together.
I am curious why some people (today as well as earlier in this week) seem to think Gunther is intentionally interfering with plans that we the readers know about but which Gunther the character had little to no reason (or opportunity) to know about. (For example, does he even know that Piro likes silent movies, and even if he does, would that be sufficient information to reach the conclusion that the festival was an attempt by Bernice to spend time with Piro?) Thus, based on what we have read last week and this week, there is no evidence from which to reasonably conclude that Gunther was acting to disrupt Bernice’s plan. Rather, the evidence tends to support the interpretation that Gunther is acting for his own interests rather than to subvert Bernice’s interest. The same or similar is likely true for Tiffany. Although she might have enough information to infer Bernice was hoping Piro would attend the silent movie showing (but maybe not enough to infer that the showing is a ‘get Piro alone’ scheme), there is no evidence (to date) from the current story arc that Tiffany is trying to implement a counter-scheme to get Piro away from Bernice. She is certainly capable of such a scheme, and it may even be the case (although I suspect it would be to help Gunther rather than for Tiffany to snag Piro), but that is conjecture at this point.
I’m thinking that Tiffany might have done something to prevent Piro from attending. She could have put up another sign w/ a different room location to confuse him.
“Gunther’s comment suggests that he knows something Bernice doesn’t… some trick on Tiff’s part to create low turnout.”
Alternatively, it could be Gunther being sympathetic following Bernice’s prior comment about waiting, which he may have correctly interpreted as evincing disappointment (even if he is not aware of the specific reason for her disappointment). As this explanation fits the actual textual evidence from the strip more than the idea that he is in on a plot, it is the better interpretation unless/until additional evidence becomes available.
I suspect that Piro might be like the young man in this article, someone who is running himself ragged to pursue his art and his education. Having been in the same spot as an adult student holding down jobs and going to school full time, and knowing others then in the same position, i can identify if that is the situation. Here is who i think he might be like:http://www.upworthy.com/meet-keanon-kyles-the-maintenance-worker-who-moonlights-as-an-international-opera-singer?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+upworthy+%28Upworthy%29
Oh, and, no, i do not sing. I coukd cause your ears to bleed if i tried. Only our ferrets like my singing, and then only if i include their names and praise words.I did work myself ragged for an education immediately following running myself ragged caring for Mom in her final year, taking on the home needs, and working when she was well enough helping keep the family out of medical bankruptcy since they did not have medical insurance. So i have to wonder if the young man some are calling a “bum” or “unpredictable” is someone who is instead working his tail off at any legit job he can get and also on his studies, plus perhaps working on a film thesis project due to his love of silent films. Hmmmm, i wonder if he and Quill have met in a class, perhaps as students or perhaps w Piro as a TA.Thinking of voices, a professional singer i once knew used to minimize talking whenever hevwas saving his voice for a role.
Let’s not forget that the events that have taken place here all week occurred in 5 minutes in their world, so to speak. 3-4 panels to depict mere moments in time. Some of you need to have patience. This is not a gag-a-day comic.
Hair is just another Jeff Spicoli ripoff (for want of a better term). Hopelessly out of date IMO. “Bill & Ted” characters ( “Dude!”) would be more relevant.
Argy2 has injections for macular degeneration.I wonder why laser surgery was a problem for you. It is for some people. There are several types of lasers used and different techniques for different uses. For me it has always been a cinch with the two types i have had (about a half dozen btwn my two eyes give or take but i stopped counting). My better eye can still have those for glaucoma, but there are upper number limits with the argon use. I have known two people before who had problems w that approach, though i have been fortunate. For me they are easy as can be.
Your friend may find some comfort from using some everyday items of her mom’s. That is an approach i have usually found helpful and so have some friends. When i was young (way back when) and caring for Mom in her last year i took a martial art class twice a week. It was important for me. Kicking and punching the air and later the bags really helped me get out a lot of tension.Your friend will need to let herself cry. I tried to be strong for other family members and a year later it hit me like a ton of bricks. She needs to regularly punctuate the mourning with happy memories, though. That is absolutely essential for not getting swallowed up by the loss. There is a lot to say for people bringing some humor and tenderness into the recollections.
