Looks like the Evanses are going full-on miscommunication/misunderstanding here. The only reason to have Tiff there is for her to believe that Piro is the the dreaded thief who Bern warned her about. I hope to goodness that I’m wrong.
@ Trilogy: Yesterday, I wasn’t intending to suggest that there would have been a head count…in fact, I was saying the opposite. I was saying that nowhere in that arc was Bernice doing so, at any time.
-
Also, in the matter of ‘potential harmful effects’ discouraging a ‘lockout policy’ if one were staying out: I was saying it based on how some kids would just ask if they could just stay at a friends’ place, overnight, in the case of going out to a late party, or in being late for curfew. I live near several universities, and it’s not unusual for people to have already made such arrangements.
Love, might it go two ways here? Is he just a prince of a guy? What will Tiffany do? Where are these people going to end up? One more arc night this week. Why is Tiff eavesdropping? She had to have followed them to the interview room. Is she trying to make sure she is not implicated in something? Very doubtful. Really quite a sticky wicket, wot??
Wow, Piro really is trapped now. As Bill Adama said on Battlestar Galactica when one of his subordinates falsely confessed to a crime in order to cover for another: “He either lied the first time or he lied the second time. And it doesn’t matter. He’s guilty, and he’ll pay the price.” That of course assumes the security guard is competent enough to realize that, or that Tiffany doesn’t somehow pull a miracle out of her hat. But clearly the guard isn’t too on-the-ball, since his reaction really should’ve been “thanks for the confession; now I’ll check the footage anyway just because you didn’t seem to want me to.”Though props to Evans for not taking the obvious route of Tiffany jumping out today to cover for Piro. I really thought she would, so I’m glad to be wrong. Let’s see what happens next.
Piro is just the martyr, but the cop better check that video or he’s the idiot. And, if Piro was undercover campus security, he would want to see it, too. Next move: Tiffany, the ball is in your court. I fear that this will turn into another Three Stooges routine. Will Bernice end up falling on her sword, too? I hate to say it, but this arc is getting interesting.
If the CamPo has video then he KNOWS who “busted the machine”.
Neither Piro (pjɛʁo) nor Bernice would get into much trouble for studying together, is he afraid she’ll get a "rep’ if it’s known they spent hours together in her dorm room?
It looks doubtful that Tiffany is about to say anything to defend Piro, as some of us wondered. I’d guess that instead, she’s going to say something to Bernice. Then if Bernice knows that Piro didn’t break the machine, she may confess to her curfew infraction to help clear him.
… But this has all gotten so complicated, who knows for sure?
So Piro is protecting Bernice’s job which shows that he’s both galant and caring, in that he senses how important the RA job is to Bernice’s self-identity. What he’s missing, though, is that the security guard does’t need Piro’s permission to watch the footage, and will probably do so to figure out why Piro was so quick to “confess”. Unless of course Tiffany steps in to distract him and save the day….
Falsely confess to a felony to avoid a curfew violation for Bernice?? He’s nuts! After the security guard saw that he had no snacks in his backpack I think he would apologize and let him go…not keep acting like he’s guilty. I wonder what Tiffany will do now that she thinks Piro is a Criminal? Will Bernice come clean??
I just feel overwhelmed by the reactions to this strip! Everyone seems to think that utter selfishness and throwing Bernice’s reputation under the bus would be the proper thing to do. How did my generation fail so badly in teaching anything about loyalty, sacrifice, or honor? No wonder this country is in such a mess—we don’t have a society anymore, it’s every man for himself.
It’s irrational for someone to confess to a serious crime to cover someone else over a dorm infraction. But it’s possible that Piro has fallen in love with Bernice, since she was so awfully nice to him – and was even coming onto him, which I think he was aware of. Love sometimes prompts people to do irrational things.
It make take at least another week for the excitement to get sorted out. But remarkably, all this may portend that for all her clumsy efforts, Bernice may have landed the love she’s been after.
Why would Bernice think the “coast was clear” if she new their was video surveillance in all the hallways?? The vending machine would be watched as well… I think the guard would review the tape first before falsely accusing anyone.
I think the guard had reasonable cause to bring Piro into his office for questioning. Whether he broke into the machine or not, he was just spotted leaving the area of the crime at a late hour which would make him a possible suspect. Rather than letting him get away while reviewing video it was better to err on the side of caution, question him, then review any available video of the scene, and let him go if he is not the culprit. If he is not a dorm resident and it is after curfew, the guard reserves the right to have him leave the building. No other harm done.
They will view the security tape. The vending machine is not truly important. The most important detail is “how does an unauthorized person gain access to the dorm”. There are many ways to gain access. If one person can gain access, then others can. If a lost key card ends up in the hand of stalker, etc., you have a real problem.
For some reason, I don’t think he confessed to cover for Bernice. There is another reason that we have yet to find out. It probably has to do with why he is homeless. Maybe his whole family is homeless and a member of his family broke into the machine and he’s covering for them. I don’t think he cares enough about Bernice to go to jail for her! But we’ll see.
Hmmmm … the plot continues to thicken. I think there’s more to P’s “confession” than simply helping B. That it does is a nice side perk, but I get the impression (not really sure how or why) that there’s much, much more depth going on here than meets the eye.
The problem I have with his confession is that someone else broke that machine, and that person won’t get caught. Even though it would be easy to find out who.
But I also can’t imagine them not checking the video, whether he confessed or not. It’s standard procedure when there’s a crime.
I have recently joked about how Luann is becoming more and more like a 90’s sitcom or a CW teen show – but seriously… haven’t you seen the “overheard conversation confusion” plot about a billion times?
A: The video will show who broke into the machine.B: Another video will show who took the TVHe’s covering for Bern, Tiff is astounded to find out that he is confessing to a theft, and eventually, we have to find out whodunit.Only bad apple in the whole series is still Les…
Some of the comments are mystifying today. Surely it is obvious that Piro is lying to protect Bernice. And is seems apparent that Tiffany is shocked and surprised to hear his “confession”. This certainly doesn’t suggest he is acting out of love for Bernice. Anything else is speculation or contradicts what the Evanses have published today. If I were the cop, I would play the security video. That would have to come out anyway in any actual court or university proceedings. I do like the ethical dilemma for Piro.
This story will resolve out all good … Piro is – perhaps not out of infatuation, but appreciation – protecting Bernice. The guard should and hopefully WILL play the video. I think the actual culprit will be disguised somehow, knowing of the installed cameras, but the video will clear Piro. THEN the question from the authorities to him will be: “OK, then who are you covering for, and why?”
If you are interrogating a possible suspect, why would the door be open? If he busted the machine, where are the goods? Also the camera(s?) were installed after the TV theft. This arc is getting bad.
Boo!!!! Piro has made such a wrong, poor, dangerous decision here!!!!!
The “breaking” of the curfew rule is so, so much more minor in comparison to what Piro is falsely “confessing” to that it boggles my mind. He may feel it is the “chivalrous” thing to do…. but…. oh…. this is so bad on so many levels!!!!
I hope that the arc does not end Saturday and I hope that we get to see a resolution that is NOT going to be so negative for Piro as it currently seems it could be.
I knew a woman who lifted an item from a store once and got caught. Decades later when she applied to become a schoolteacher – the incident was still an obstacle everybody had to deal with. Piro doesn’t seem to understand this. And Piro with Bernice was only a couple of minutes after curfew – how bad could that get? Are we going to have Piro, Tiffany and Bernice all confessing to busting the machine? Usually we only see things that stupid when nations go to war…
Also, this story has cleared up the question about whether Piro is or isn’t a student. He is, but he won’t be any longer, on account of his admitting to theft and destruction of property inside a dorm.
What’s with that hokey scarf? Rakish in December, ridiculous in (almost) May. I realize that not shaving makes Piro “cool”, hence ill-suited to the plodding Bernice (who will, in the fullness of time, find her way to Whatzisname, who has also abandoned his razor)..why am I reading this strip…
I’ve been assuming up until now that Tiffany was keeping Piro away fro Bernice for Gunther’s sake. She likes Gunther, but knows he likes Bernice. But now I am beginning to wonder if she was helping out Piro for another reason.
On a totally different note: Anyone else notice the change in the word/letter spacing on this message board? On mine it has increased just a bit. Also, anyone with space(s) within their message board handle (as is in mine), actually show up on screen – but they did not before. My computer acts up at times, so I didn’t know if it was just me. I’m not complaining – if anything I like it! Same thing for anyone else? -CtE
This arc is like driving one of those old dodge-em cars. Everyday, I think one thing, and the next day Greg bumps me into another direction. I just hope that they will resolve this mystery, and not suspend it until further notice. I still want to see Piro turn out to be an undercover campus cop trying to discover the source of this little crime spree, and can’t blow his cover by telling the uniformed cop.
Whatever Tiffany does next is key. How much more misunderstanding will get piled on here? She will go to Bernice and tell her that Piro is the one who has been breaking into to things, which could turn Bernice against him before he has a chance to clear it up with her……..yikes!
Don’t do it, Tiffany! Don’t get yourself into trouble to save Piro’s somewhat-worn hide!
