You Know, if Tiff doesn’t want to do anything but Eat, Watch TV, and Stay in Her room, I wonder how dedicated She is to Her On-Line Courses? And Is Gunther STILL Helping Her in the “Study-Buddy” Department?
Small children make those kinds of cards in pre-school, and kindergarten, or 1st or 2nd grade for parents all the time. They may be crude, and easily fall apart, but parents generally appreciate them because of the honesty of innocence. I hope Luann can give the card, such as it is, to Tiffany, and it touches her heart, and perhaps leads her to travel out of her funk. IMO her funk is based on purposeless—she feels empty, and has no purpose. Up-to-now everything has been based on herself only, but Gunther, ironically, has helped her see the emptiness of all Ego, and SuperEgo. (see what I did there, with the Freudian reference) and the possible fullness of understanding innocence and love outside oneself. Don’t be selfish even if for defensive reasons.
Am I the only one liking Bernice less and less? She’s judgemental, pushy and has no sense of humor. I am sorry but IRL this friendship would have died a long time ago.
During the grade twelve I started to assume that the other students hated me/wanted nothing to do with me. This one time I left the classroom after thinking I failed a quizz and after the class ended the teacher told me that this one girl from the class wanted to see if I was fine. I sort of broke down there because again, I just assumed people had an active dislike towards me. The reason I bring this up is because Tiffany will probably go through a similar thing.
Geez, Bernice. Make sure you are protected and never be a mother. Be like your high school counselor – chasing Mr. Foriaty for naught. Forever chasing, currently, that is Piro, and a series of them to come.
Tiff needs to be cheered up and she’s recently put on weight… Why not take her to a lingerie party to get new undies! We can tie all of these storylines together!
It seems kind of insulting to women who can’t or don’t have kids to assume kids give life meaning. Tiff didn’t work much with the kids, my guess is Luann needed a crafts project for the kids and suggested the card, which the kids would as happily have made for Bernice or anyone else. That does make giving this to Tiff more of a sweet, but misguided and self centered act on Luann’s part. I think Tiff is feeling purposeless, but kids aren’t the answer. Compliments on any of her non physical attributes/accomplishments might be the way to go. Should also mention OF COURSE Tiff’s defenses are up around Luann. Luann, since high school, has been qualifying any accomplishments Tiff makes as being a result of her looks and money/up bringing. Given Bernice is Luann’s friend and anything Tiff says to her is likely to get back to Luann, yeah, she’s playing defense and watching her back. I’ve said it before but college and academia, where blond is a bad word, is a really bad fit for Tiff. Drop out and start a business. Do what Luann can’t – write a one page business plan, approach dad for the money, gain dad’s respect by making a profit and enjoy the purpose that comes from providing for the livelihood of employees and donating to charities. Let smart people enjoy paying $120/unit to be reassured they are smart.
Today’s comic is a bit cloaked in terms of driving the plot, IMO. But, as far as my afternoon pipe & coffee analysis for today:
1. It is apparent that the KIDS were impressed enough with Tiffany, even though rarely interacting with her lately to CARE for her.
2. With Tiffany’s previous “lack of interest” in dealing with the kids, it may be that the card would have little-to-no impact if she receives it.
3. However, with Tiffany’s current state of feeling “down” (no need to debate if it is clinical depression or general sadness or something else at this point…. we do not know), it may be that she has a change of heart about the card and the kids…. and perhaps she will be very appreciative of their efforts.
4. Bernice says that Tiffany quit Kids First. I had thought that she stayed at Kids First, but was working in the office area instead of with the kids. So, I wonder which is more accurate…. has Tiffany FULLY QUIT or has she only quit working with the kids? At this juncture, I will have to guess it is fully quit.
I didn’t see anything in the last panel that made me think Bernice doesn’t like kids. I think her sour expression came from the fact that the card was falling apart and now there is something that needs to be cleaned up.
Tiffany, as far as I can tell, never had much of a childhood herself and thus was never comfortable around children. But she has changed since attending college, has become less self involved and more cordial toward friends. Her recent eating disorder might be cured if she had a project like Kids First.
Tiffany did not seem to have a good, supportive family so she relied on her beauty to attract social contacts and men. Not just one man, her needs required whole football teams. Then, a couple of months ago some guy rejected her snd she became depressed. Her reliable sexiness, her one tool to get attention had failed her. Tiff and Gunther need to spend a lot of “moments” together.

Maybe Tiff is meant to work with kids after all. Her and Luann could make a nice teacher duo.

The card may be falling apart, but on the upside, Luann got her fourth finger of her right hand back by the final panel.

What a blatant metaphor for life. Which begs the question, if the metaphor is this blatant, is it still a metaphor?

She should check to see if it has a warranty on it. Ah, heck – even with love, there are no guarantees…
