I think the special guest is the guy who magically dyed Luann’s hair in such a way that it starts off blonde in panel 1 and goes back orange in panel 2.
It’s disappointing to see this ‘toon return to the past of high school Luann and high school Tiffany snarking each other. Maybe I’ll check back here next month.
Luann – Please don’t get outclassed by Tiffany (looks like that’s about to happen). Luann works much harder for her kids, but Tiffany is more appreciated. The real world strikes again…
Tiffany is liked by the kids, even though she can be so dismissive. Perhaps she is more charismatic than might be gathered from the way Tiffany is usually portrayed. Wonder who the special guest might be. Anyone we know, or someone totally new?
Jack and his dog and the issue will be the attraction/competition/reaction both ways between Luann, Tiffany, and Jack. If Tiffany flirts and competes, and he ignores her or puts her off, because he only has eyes for Luann, then not only is his flirtatious self sublimated to his feelings for Luann, but Tiffany will/might be impelled to try to change his reaction. One possible scenario.
In the original version of this strip, Tiffany drooled uncontrollably upon hearing PIZZA but newsprint is a sponge for slobber, so this art replaced it. However during the switch Luann’s beautiful golden hair color picked up Tiffany’s drab “faded hay” hue because of the drool factor. Ugh. Gotta get that fixed before Luann looks in the mirror.
Tiffany has becoming Suzanne Sugarbaker – porked up but still fab-u-lous and loved by all (in her mind, at least). So how long before we have Luann giving a variation of the ’Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" monologue?
Time for another prediction. The “special guest” will be a new male interest for Tiffany. If it’s Jack there will be competition with Luann. When Luann gets any male interest it always turns into a competition with Tiffany. Luann usually gets suckered into a deeper interest in the male that she originally had. But if someone else, perhaps he’ll be a replacement for the “odd couple” (two words, lower case).
While we’re all atwitter with the return of the “new” old Tiff, there is a dark side (if Tiff were a real person). Tiff had undergone a serious emotional crisis instigated by Ann Eyeful and her romantic relationship with “daddy.” She poured out her heart to Gunther about her perceiver lack of acceptable male attention. Gunther dropped the ball and rejected her romantic come-on (let’s just be friends). She failed to attract attention from Les; almost the polar opposite of Gunther on “acceptable” males. Agter all, negative strokes are better than no strokes (sorry TA fans).
Her response to all this stress is to have a phony epiphany with Fogerty and revert to her old way of dealing with the external world (self-assured beauty queen) yet accept (supposedly) her new body image. This would raise the eyebrows of any counselor (figuratively, if not physically).
But then Tiffany is but a figment of Greg’s imagination. GASP!
Why do all the gocomics open up to only half the page and we have to scroll down to read it all. Then if we take to long the ad pops up and covers the bottom area. WHY GOCOMICS, WHY?
It seems most likely the special guest will be Jack. If so:
1. I like Jack as a character and it would be interesting to see him interact with kids.’’
2. With Tiffany present, if Jack arrives, this could devolve into a “jealousy” struggle between Luann & Tiffany… with Jack unknowingly and unaware… in the middle. I hope this is not where we are going, though.
There are of course, many other possibilities for the “guest”. But, Jack seems the most likely.
I can’t fault Tiffany for having a great sense of timing. It is times like this that I start to sympathize with Tiff father though. He gave and continues to give her a comfortable existence while acknowledging that other girls (Luann) are probably going to give her a hard time about her perceived “successful” status of rich, skinny and smart (college). He is and has been doing what he can to protect her from that girl on girl jealousy crap- ie, a private dorm room to not have to room with another girl – while encouraging Tiff to do things she enjoys (cheer, a social life). He is right to be concerned about Tiff having a back up plan rather then acting, especially with her high school maturity level, but a school guidance councilor should be helping her find out what that is, not doing personal depression counseling. My guess is he would be OK with supporting Tiffs choice to move out and in with a guy, by contrast.
No wonder teen girls and disturbed adult women are so fanatic about weight and often commit suicide. Society is so obsessed with unrealistic ideas about body images, when the real issue should be health first (mental and physical) and attractiveness of the person. Tiffany is not less attractive because she is a few pounds heavier, and to make such disparaging comments about her is so revealing about the prejudice and hatred that women in particular have to undergo in this society.
I think the special guest will be Jack and his presence will rekindle old competitive urges between these two, which will bring us back to old Tiffany.
Why would Jack be a “special guest”? He’s just a random guy, insofar as the kids are concerned. Why would the principal even let Luann bring him to Kidz First?

Well now. “Who” could possibly be the “Special Guest” Luann spoke of?
1) “Reddy the Fire Engine?” (Brad and Toni)
2) “Billy the Book Worm?” (Gunther Berger)
3) Jack and his Dog?
4) Quill?
5) Professor Zebo?
6) Ringo?
And I’ll HOWL if it’s the Chess Guy from Yesterday!

Well, the kids didn’t notice she gained weight and if they did, they wouldn’t care. Unlike many in here…

The kids look like Bernice, Delta, Ox, and Aaron in their youth. I think this is taking place in Luann’s imagination, at least partially.

Today, Tiffany is drawn almost on par with Luann. Yesterday, more similar to Des.
Considering it can take months to move through a single Luanniverse ‘week’ this must be some crash diet… or oversight.

For some reason, Tiffany in today’s panel reminded of Delta Burke’s character in Designing Women after she had gained some weight.

Either Tiffany lost all her extra weight in the span of a day, or the artist forgot to make her fat today.
