We only had one dog that like to play fetch. The others would fetch a couple of times and when you tossed the ball again, would look at you as if tot say, “You threw it, if you want it, you go get it. I’m done.”
For several years, we had a golden retriever and a beagle. If we were to leave the house, we would put them in the fenced in back yard. As we put them out, we would give each of them a leather chew. When we came home we would let them back in. Almost immediately the beagle would beg to be let out again.
Turns out that he would steal the Golden’s chewie and hide it. When we came home, he would retrieve it for a second snack. The only way that we would be able to keep him from stealing Penny’s chewie would be to tease him by pretending to steal his treat. That way he would focus on his own snack and leave Penny alone.
My former roommate had 2 yorkie-chihuahuas , Max and Brandie, When Mom would give them each a chew toy, Brandie would get Max to give chase then circle run back and take both chew toys.

Judging by Marm’s look in the second panel, he doesn’t seem too pleased to be out at whatever time it is in the morning…

Marm has the idea! Let the ball come to him! The dog learns plenty from the humans that come into his life along the way.
