There’s no proof of the existence of a “gay gene”: while people are born with different sexual tastes, a homosexual lifestyle is a decision. So while not easy, it’s entirely possible to consciously reject that lifestyle. The big problem here is that Matthew isn’t being open about his homosexual inclinations: if he’s not shooting straight (pun intended) with Lila now, it’s not going to get better.
Numerous studies with identical twins (who have identical DNA) have, indeed, provided ample evidence that homosexuality often has a genetic element. Despite what many people would like to believe, homosexuality is seldom a choice. Very few people consiously choose to be attracted to the same sex. It is true that living a homosexual lifestyle (participating in homosexual sex) is a choice, but it is also true that living a heterosexual lifestyle (participating in heterosexual sex) is a choice.
Why would I “choose” a life of discrimination and hate towards me? Being gay has been a very difficult life. If you don’t understand that, you don’t understand what it’s like to be in a minority that is prejudiced against. And yes, sassy1, she should hock the ring, LOL!
I may be off-base with this generalization . . . but it’s always seemed to me, that the more ‘homophobic’ a man is, the more likely it is, that he’s desperately trying to keep himself in the closet!
Funny how the only people who claim being gay is a choice are (supposedly) straight. As John said, who would chose to be the target of so much hate from the ignorant masses of our society? It’s that segment of society that forces people like Matthew to believe they have to settle for a lie and marry the opposite sex instead of being true to themselves.
Here, as in health care, person-centric language is appropriate. A person is not ‘homosexual’; rather, a person is attracted to people of the same sex. The same is true for so-called ‘heterosexuals’ and all the other ‘sexuals’. The attraction is not a choice. The choice is whether or not to act on those inclinations. This is common sense. As for whether or not it’s okay to act on them, it’s useless to get into a discussion of sexual morality unless there’s a common frame of reference, which should not be assumed on a comic strip comments page. If she’s calling off the engagement, she should give the ring back! Etiquette.

Lila, ask Matthew straight out about it. Better to clear the air now than later.
