It’s all security theater, for the benefit of us rubes who live in the willing-suspension-of-disbelief that such theater requires. What worked is protecting the flight crews from cockpit invasions by strong doors and locks. 9/11 wouldn’t have happened if there had been such protections for those flight crews.
Please use the vaseline. Once I carried on my video camera and was told to put the battery in and show it did work the camera, mind you they did not ask to show the other 3 batteries that were in case. Another time I had my friend drop off my luggage in the morning and then he drove me to the airport for a 3 PM flight as we drank at the bar in the airport I looked at my watch and noticed I had 5 minutes to get to the plane. Got there and there was a plane load of upset passengers and crew. later I asked a crew member what would happen if I came later. She said the plane would go to a clear area and everyone would have to claim their luggage. I don’t know if they were happy to see me or mad.
