In first place in the camp wide race goes to Lindsay! Don't worry, folks!... No self-esteem will be bruised in this race... All campers get first-place ribbons!... And a first-place for Matthew! First for Cecelia and Joseph! And a first-place for Rory. Awesome. I didn't even know there was a race... I was at the arcade center!

And when those kids leave high-school and enter “the REAL world”, they will be in for a shock when only the best performers get a raise – and not “you” for “just showing up for work”.

I think Tomoth was referring to everyone of the children not Rory in particular. There will always be a winner….and a first runner-up. If you are into softening the terminology.

Wait till the real world bites these kids in the butt and they can’t have/get a $75K job fresh out of high school or with a GED. It ain’t graded on a scale, it’s Pass/Fail.

I was just another pretty face among millions, and millions more to come?

I was just involved in a blog discussion on the participation trophy phenomenon, and the consensus from current and recent parents was that it was largely a myth, except for very young (like, <6) leagues.

Ugh—self-esteem camp. The only place I’ve ever seen something like this and agreed with it was at a horse show, in a class for very early “riders,” toddlers who were led around the ring by a parent who also held them on the horse or pony they were perched on. Each got a ribbon at the end. It was all about letting the little kiddos get to be in on the party. They were too young to understand anything more than they now had ribbons of their own and didn’t have to try to take their older brothers’ or sisters’ ribbons.

Just think of how awful it must be to be told all your life how wonderful you are and then find out it’s not true after you’re elected President.

As usual, everyone gets the whole idea of self-esteem dead wrong. Building self-esteem is not about giving every child a ribbon for showing up. Kids see through that. Building self-esteem is about helping a child discover his or her won particular gift and building that skill.

they should get participation ribbons, not first place.
