I engineered a recording session for a Dixieland band made up of university profs. The clarinetist was fond of cigars; and this was when you could smoke anywhere you wanted — except in the studio, where the mics were so sensitive, the smoke would gum them up. So I opened the talkback and advised the clarinetist of the situation. He glared at me; but he put out the cigar. One of my assistants said I must have been real brave to take the cigar out of his mouth. Well, I was only at the school for one year; and as a grad student I didn’t have any of his classes. No problem for me.
