At least well into the ’80s, in California, employers had to give you two hours off to vote, usually by going in late or leaving early. It was unpaid, but it helped.
I can’t speak for all 50 states, but most of them will let you vote in advance, via absentee ballot. And anyone can do it; you don’t have to swear that you’ll be absent on election day, they just call it that for historical reasons.
Many years ago I heard of a town in Maine that would open the polls at midnight then close them a half-hour later. The town had less than 20 voters and they wanted to get their numbers in first.
