just think if you crawled through the desert, came upon that machine as if in a mirage, and found out it only sold dr pepper…

I like how the strip does just enough to avoid trademark issues with the logo.

Those things are great. One instance of no improvement in 1970s technology. They’ve saved me from wasting a dollar on a lottery ticket many times.

Just a coincidence, or inspired by the Monkees’ movie HEAD? In that film, Micky Dolenz is lost in the desert and discovers a Coke machine. When repeated attempts to get a Coke to come out fail, he finds an abandoned army tank, and destroys the machine.

I had some brand new dollar bills, in a bank wrapper, consecutively serial numbered, that were pristine. No bill reading machine would accept them. They’d take old wrinkled and dirty ones but would reject the new ones every time. Lotto machines, self checkout machines, etc. I could only spend them with live cashiers.

“For want of a nail”. Alas.

No, it’s working exactly the way I intended it to when I put it out there.

Sensible countries have done away with low-denomination bills and replaced them with coins. And done away with pennies, too.

I sympathize; I’ve had a similar problem, but without the desert setting. By the way, where is that thing plugged in?
